When Amina was 12 years old, she heard of AWEMA’s NGO. For the following three academic years, she attended the NGO’s tutoring classes, hoping to improve her grades. However, she gained much more than a better academic performance.
In the beginning, Amina was shy and reserved, reluctant to participate in class. However, she gradually gained confidence until she blossomed into an outgoing, jovial person. “My teachers were very encouraging,” Amina recalls, “so my fear of answering questions was gone. I felt so loved at the NGO and was treated like family. This was so different from school or anywhere else outside the NGO.”
Amina was the first of her family to attend the NGO, but she wouldn’t be the last. One year after she joined the tutoring classes, she encouraged her mother to enroll in the NGO’s literacy program. Her mother joined the classes and eventually took the literacy exam and passed. Amina’s siblings also participated in various activities at the NGO.
Amina graduated from secondary school with an Agricultural Technical Diploma and dreams of pursuing higher education. Now almost a decade after she first attended our NGO, Amina came back – as a staff member! She joined our team as an Assistant Teacher for preschoolers. She says that working with young kids taught her patience and helped her develop new skills in engaging with children, especially those who are new to the preschool.
